If you are looking for a CrystalRoof alternative, or for what replaced StreetCheck, this page compares what each offers, free and paid. We read each site’s own pages on 30 October 2026 and link them below. Prices and plans change, so check the linked page before you pay.
We run CrimeMapsUK, so we are not a neutral party. We have kept to what each site states about itself, quoted where it matters, and left the judgement to you.
The short version
StreetCheck no longer has an offer of its own: CrystalRoof bought it in March 2026, and many of its pages, including postcode crime pages, now redirect to CrystalRoof. That leaves two to compare.

CrystalRoof
CrystalRoof is a neighbourhood research site. Its home page says “Know the neighbourhood behind the postcode” and covers crime alongside other area information.
Free. Its pricing page has a free tier, “Start your search with the essentials”, for “Exploring different areas before you start viewing”, “Narrowing down and shortlisting areas” and “Basic postcode checks”. Its postcode crime pages open without signing in: the page for E8 1EY showed the yearly rate, a score, and a rate and score for each of 14 crime types. Its pricing page lists “Access to blurred data” among what is included, which suggests some data is blurred for people without a subscription. We could not tell which.
Paid. Three subscriptions, each “Cancel anytime”:
- weekly, £12.99 a week
- monthly, £22.99 a month, marked “Most popular”
- 3-month, £49.99 for 3 months
Under “What’s included” the pricing page lists “Access to blurred data”, “Access to the Noise section”, “Access to the Resident Reviews section” and “Map drag, zoom, and overlay selection”. It does not say which plan each item belongs to. We saw no trial on that page.
Crime. CrystalRoof credits data.police.uk. Its crime pages give a yearly rate “per 1000 at-risk population” and a score out of 10 for each area and each crime type. For example, its page for E8 1EY gives 88.7 crimes per 1,000 at-risk population for September 2025 to August 2026, “a medium crime score of 6/10”. Its crime methodology post of 3 August 2026 says the at-risk population “combines residents with the non-resident workplace population”. The crime page notes that burglary is measured “per thousand at-risk properties”.
API. Its API page lists monthly plans from £25 for 2,000 credits to £2,000 for 1,200,000 credits, and says “Try any plan free for 7 days or 100 credits, whichever comes first.”
StreetCheck
StreetCheck was a free postcode lookup. CrystalRoof announced on 23 March 2026 that it had bought StreetCheck, in a post titled “Crystal Roof Acquires StreetCheck”: “Crystal Roof has acquired Streetcheck”.
On 30 October 2026 the StreetCheck addresses we tried, the home page and old
postcode and crime pages, returned a permanent redirect to CrystalRoof. The
home page goes to CrystalRoof’s home page, and an old postcode page such as
streetcheck.co.uk/crime/e81ey goes to CrystalRoof’s crime page for the same
postcode. Not every old address redirects. There is no separate StreetCheck offer, so
the CrystalRoof section above is what a StreetCheck link now leads to. For the
background, see What happened to StreetCheck.
CrimeMapsUK
CrimeMapsUK shows the street-crime and stop-and-search records police publish on data.police.uk for England and Wales.
Free. The crime map, the dashboards, and the pages for police force areas, postcode districts and sectors. The postcode crime checker counts the records published for the 0.5 km around a postcode in the last 12 months, with no email. The 12-month PDF neighbourhood report is free too: you give an email address so we can send the link, and daily limits apply. There are free monthly area alerts and a free district API within daily limits.
Paid. One-off PDF reports for the 0.5 km around a postcode, with no subscription:
- the 5-year report, £19.99
- the Move report, £29.99: the 5-year report plus sold prices, schools, flood risk and broadband, for postcodes in England
- a pack of five 5-year reports, £79.99
Business API plans cost £29 a month for 2,000 calls or £99 a month for 20,000.
Crime. Counts of published police records, with their months. Where the area matches, district, sector and force pages also give records per 1,000 residents counted in the Census 2021. There is no score or grade. The methodology explains each step.
Two ways of measuring the same records
All three draw on the same data.police.uk records, so the differences are in presentation:
- Denominator. CrystalRoof divides by an at-risk population that includes people who work in an area. CrimeMapsUK divides by residents only. A residents-only rate reads high where many people visit, such as city centres, and CrimeMapsUK says so beside every rate. A rate that counts workers reads lower there.
- Scores. CrystalRoof also gives each area and crime type a score out of 10. Its crime pages describe the score as a comparison “with other local areas in England and Wales”. CrimeMapsUK shows counts, categories and rates with their comparisons, and no score.
- Missing forces. Greater Manchester Police publish no street-level crime to data.police.uk, according to the known issues in the data.police.uk changelog, so no site built on that data can show street-level figures for Greater Manchester.
Which to use
- For scored research across many postcodes during a search, with noise, resident reviews and other area layers, CrystalRoof’s subscriptions are built for that.
- For the published police record around one postcode without a score, or a one-off PDF to keep or share, CrimeMapsUK is built for that.
- For the source itself, police.uk and data.police.uk are free and official.
