These are published crime rates, not safety ratings. Expect city centres, stations and big shopping areas near the top: many people visit, few live there, and a residents-only rate counts the visitors' records against the residents alone. Published locations are approximate; they are snapped to anonymous map points before release, and each record is assigned to its nearest postcode, so records near a boundary can fall in the next area. Areas with fewer than 5,000 residents, and areas inside a force publication gap, are not ranked. Rates cover England and Wales only. How rankings are built.

Checking a specific address?
A district or sector rate averages many streets. A neighbourhood report maps where records cluster in the fixed 0.5 km around one exact postcode.
How these rates are built: methodology and what a postcode district crime page shows.
